Two ways to verify your identity

Choose a live video appointment with MySmartMailbox or use a notary. Both options complete the signature-verification step for your mail application.

Video verification with MySmartMailbox

Meet our authorized CMRA representative by live video with sound. Have your completed Form 1583 and two acceptable identity documents ready, then sign or confirm your signature during the appointment. No outside notary is required for this option.

Verification with a notary

Prefer a notary? Have your signature acknowledged by a U.S.-commissioned notary, in person or through an eligible online service. Then upload the completed form and your two acceptable identity documents securely in your account. The notary may charge a separate fee.

One document must be an acceptable government-issued photo ID; a second, separate document must verify your home address. Please upload documents through your account, not by email. Appointments are arranged with our team; your mailbox activates only after all required checks and application steps are approved.

Mail FAQ

Common questions

Can I search and copy text from my scanned mail?

Yes. All mail plans include automatic text recognition (OCR) for new scans at no extra OCR charge. Once processing is complete and text is recognized, a Searchable PDF download appears beside the scan in your dashboard. Download it to search or copy the recognized text in your PDF reader.

Each OCR PDF is available for 30 days after processing and is then automatically deleted. This does not change retention of the original scan. Existing archived scans are not processed. OCR works best with clear, printed English text; handwriting, other languages, and poor-quality images may not be recognized accurately. Always check important details against the original.

What does a scan include?

An envelope image is provided when mail arrives. When you request Open & Scan, we open the item and scan its pages to your secure dashboard. The monthly scan allowance is measured in scanned pages.

Can I forward original mail?

Yes. Submit a forwarding request from the mail item in your dashboard. The $3 service fee and postage are charged when the request is processed.

Why do I need Form 1583?

USPS requires this authorization before a commercial mail receiving agency can receive mail in your name. You will also provide two acceptable forms of identification.

Do I have to pay for an outside notary?

No. You can sign or confirm your Form 1583 signature during a live audio-and-video appointment with our authorized CMRA representative instead. An outside notary is an alternative, not a requirement for the MySmartMailbox video option. See both options.

Can I receive checks?

Yes. For an eligible check, request Check Deposit from the dashboard. We can mail the check to your bank for $5 or personally deposit it at an eligible local bank branch for $10. Your bank must accept the selected deposit method.

Do I need Package Forwarding too?

No. Mail Scanning and Package Forwarding are separate services. Add Package Forwarding only if you want a pay-per-use account for purchases and parcels from UPS, FedEx, DHL, USPS, or approved local couriers.
